Alfonso Siani graduated in Medicine in 1980 at the “Federico II” University of Naples Medical School, where he conducted research in the field of the prevention of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases through non-pharmacological/dietary intervention. In 1998, he moved to the Institute of Food Sciences of the CNR (ISA-CNR), where he is currently holds the position of Director of Research. Dr. Siani’s area of expertise involves cardiovascular and chronic disease epidemiology and prevention. He has a profound experience in the field of nutrition and health, including issues related to the risk assessment of diet-related diseases and disorders, environmental and lifestyle influences, biomarkers of exposure and efficacy, food safety. More recently, Dr. Siani’s group focused its activity on biochemical and metabolomics biomarkers of dietary exposures and early diseases. He coordinates the participation of ISA-CNR in many international research projects (Olivetti Heart Study, Wandsworth Heart and Stroke Study, the FP5 IMMIDIET Project, the FP6 IDEFICS study, the FP7 IFamily study), always holding leading positions. He authored about 180 papers in ISI scientific journals, with a current H-index of 50. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the internationally renowned journal ‘Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases’. From July 2012, he is a member of the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) at the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), and from 2015 he is the Chair of the Health Claims Working Group.
